Lawrencian Newspaper Spotlight

The inner workings of the Lawrencian Newspaper is more than just simple writing and interviewing. Rather, it is the process of choosing a topic, gathering information on it, drafting, editing, working with teachers and administrators, and finally publishing it to the Lawrencian website that makes the newspaper such an engaging yet rigorous process. Although the Lawrencian’s writing process seems to be exceedingly straightforward, all the hard work that goes into each article comes from three equally contributing positions within the Lawrencian Newspaper club.
Staff writers are considered regular members of the club, but are still extremely important to the existence of our newspaper because of their commitment to writing the articles that are posted on our website every month. E-Board members edit and review the drafts to help writers maintain the quality of the articles Lawrencian pushes out. Along with this work, they also write articles to contribute to the amount of publications completed each month. Finally, Mr. Foster, our advisor, leads the club, organizes articles, and helps student members interview with his connections to teachers, students, and other community members. Though often working in the background, his hard work demonstrates his dedication to his student writers and E-Board members as an advisor.
Through our Lawrencian hierarchy, each person who is a part of the Lawrencian has a unique and central role in the article publications process. Senior co-editor Pranav Soleti has been dedicated to the Lawrencian team since his freshman year. He shared that he “was eager to step into this role because it allowed [him] to play a direct role in helping shape the direction and quality of [Lawrencian’s] publication while simultaneously mentoring younger writers.” He views Lawrencian as a safe space to grow and encourage students to keep writing! Our website manager, senior Riley Barnes, has the important role of making sure our website is organized and visually appealing, uploading the articles and taking a last minute read through to make sure everything is worded and spelled correctly. She also takes the initiative of reaching out to Lawrencian writers if their articles aren’t shared with our account to ensure we’ll have them in time. Riley Barnes joined Lawrencian her senior year and shares that, “Lawrencian is one of [her] favorite organizations. [The] Lawrencian gives [her] another way to strengthen [her] writing skills as well as a way to have an important role within [their] school and community and create new friendships.”
Other editors of the Lawrencian take charge during uploading and keeping track of what articles can be finished or not. It can take three hours or more to upload a month’s worth of articles, every article taking an average of 15-20 minutes to put on our website.
Overall, the Lawrencian is a fun and great club to strengthen writing skills as well as making new friends and connections. One of our freshman writers, Amolika Bhatia, believes that, “Lawrencian is a change from typical English assignments, and choosing any topic to write about adds fun to something many people would otherwise see as a chore.” According to freshman Evangeline Johnson, “The Lawrencian family is one of kindness, being supportive, and texting each other right before the deadlines to submit an article.” Returning sophomore writer Serra Elayda shares that “[she] does like writing but [she] never [managed] to grow enough motivation to write outside of school on [her] own time, but Lawrencian gives [her] a reason to write without the stress of grades.”
Thanks to our dedicated advisor, Mr. Foster, the Lawrencian E-Board, administration, and all the Lawrencian staff writers who make Lawrencian a safe, encouraging, and exciting space to start writing!
