This month, Lawrence High School proudly supported the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, raising money and awareness for childhood cancer research. As the largest non-government funder of childhood cancer research grants, the foundation plays a critical role in the search for cures. Many members of the LHS community participated in “Brave the Shave,” and we are excited to highlight a few of them here.

This year's participants! (Top Row L to R): Mrs. Brunner, Mr. O'Connor, Mr. Nabit, Mr. Provow, Dr. Adam (Bottom Row L to R): Brenden Foti, Elaina Jersey, Luke Settimi

One standout participant is freshman Elaina Jersey, who has been involved in St. Baldrick’s for an impressive seven years. She shared that her inspiration came from an older student who introduced her to the cause. Over time, Elaina came to understand the importance of supporting childhood cancer research, realizing how easily it could affect someone her own age.

Elaina often wears a pin that reads, “Ask me why I’m bald” as a way to start conversations and spread awareness among her peers. When asked if she had ever felt hesitant about shaving her head, she explained that she never has, reminding herself that “it’s just hair” and that it will grow back. For her, the impact of helping others far outweighs any temporary change in appearance. Over the past seven years, Elaina has raised an incredible $10,152, proving that her commitment goes beyond fundraising as she is deeply dedicated to raising awareness.

We also spoke with Mrs. Melissa Brunner, who helped organize this year’s event. Now in her third year coordinating St. Baldrick’s at LHS, she described the experience as incredibly rewarding. She originally became involved to bring the school community together for a meaningful cause and has been inspired by the event’s growth each year. She shared how proud she is of every participant, noting that it takes real courage to shave their heads in support of others. “It’s such a powerful way to show support,” she said, “and to be part of something bigger than yourself.” The LHS community is grateful for her dedication in making this event possible.

Another inspiring participant was Principal Dr. David Adam, who has been involved with St. Baldrick’s for 15 years. He was first introduced to the event while serving as principal of Lawrence Intermediate School, where a team of students, teachers, and administrators came together for the cause. Over the years, Dr. Adam has witnessed firsthand the progress made in improving the quality of life for children diagnosed with cancer. Reflecting on his experience, he shared that he did not initially realize the impact the event would have, but now sees how contributions help support advancements in treatment and care. His advice to anyone considering participation? “Just do it!” he said, emphasizing that it is an opportunity to join a community committed to making a difference.

Among our team, we also recognize Mr. Brian Provow, a Special Education teacher, who enthusiastically joined the event for the first time this year. Wanting to get involved in the school community, he saw St. Baldrick’s as a meaningful way to contribute. Knowing the cause behind the event made his decision an easy one.

Overall, the “LHS Cardinals 26” team earned 4th place across the Lawrenceville community, raising over $11,700 this year! The participation of Lawrence High School’s teachers, students, and community members in St. Baldrick’s continues to demonstrate the power of compassion and courage. Together, students and staff are making a real difference in the fight against childhood cancer.
