LHS Over The Summer: English Prep Course & Summer Science Scholars
Written by: Sraddha Vitta (‘29)

While many students spent their sum relaxing before the new school year, some LHS students spent part of their summer, exploring and getting ready for the year ahead.
The English Prep Course and Summer Science Scholars gave students the opportunity to strengthen their skills while participating hands-on activities.
English Scholars
Led by English teacher Mr. Foster, the English Prep Course focused on helping students become stronger readers and writers. Students practiced reading passages carefully and learned how to annotate important details and ideas. Throughout the course, students also created posters and learned different techniques to improve their writing. Students used several short stories including, Thank You Ma’am by Langston Hughes, Everyday Use by Alice Walker, and Araby by James Joyce to practice these new skills. After reading and discussing these short stories, students worked on writing TIQAIQA responses. Overall, the course helped students practice skills that they can continue using throughout the year and for the rest of high school, especially when analyzing passages and writing of literature.
Science Scholars

The Summer Science Scholars, led by Chemistry teacher Ms. Andahazy, gave students the opportunity to explore different areas of science not included in the school's curriculum. As Joshua Onyenwe put it, “Join for the experiences you won’t get during the regular school year.” The teacher assistants Gian Diaz ‘27, Joshua Onyenwe ‘27, Iman Ifran ‘28 and Sraddha Vitta ‘29 helped ensure Ms. Andahazy’s teaching assistants this year! (From left to right: Joshua O., Sraddha V., Gian D., Iman I.) everything ran smoothly while guiding students through the various activities. Throughout the program, students learned different note-taking techniques
while participating in a variety of hand-on activities and labs. The program covered topics including geology, botany and astronomy.

The program began with geology, where students broke geodoes and practiced Members of the Summer Science Scholars identifying three major types of rocks: metamorphic, sedimentary and igneous. In the Botany unit, students participated in fieldwork at different locations, including a bird sanctuary, where they observed different types of plants and plant parts. Students also had the chance to observe ducks and turtles during their outdoor exploration. And finally, during the Astronomy unit, students explored the plants in our solar system while learning interesting facts and statistics about each one. They discussed the possibility of humans colonizing planets outside of earth and considered what life on another planet could look like. Students also participated in a rocket demonstration led by Joshua Onyenwe and packed space bags to see which items they could bring to space. After working hard throughout both programs, the students and teachers celebrated with a combined party on the last day. Both the English Prep Course and the Summer Scholars gave students opportunities to learn outside of the regular school year. From analyzing short stories to breaking geodes, students were able to build useful skills while having fun and preparing for the year ahead.
