If you were to look around at any of Lawrence High School’s football games, you would see a supportive community of classmates, parents, and faculty. The camaraderie of the event is evident in the atmosphere and the first hand accounts given about the game. When we asked a random sample of students what 3 words they would use to describe this event, they responded with, “Color[ful], energetic, and really fun”, “Fun, authentic, and [memorable]”, and “Exciting, community, and spirit[ed]” (2 anonymous students, Abigail Penna).

The weather of the homecoming game foreshadowed the final score. However, it also labelled new beginnings of the next generations. There was an intense, gloomy setting of hard descending rain. A light tippity tap clashed against the bleachers and selling-tables nearby. It left an earthy scent and misty air.

After entering the stadium, you can catch a whiff of sweet, delectable pastries from the nearby Class of 2028 bake sale. Brownies, cookies, and cupcakes as well as a hint of chicken and vibrant, succulent drinks from the food stall were available for purchase to keep everyone energized for the game.

Prior to kick off, the marching band performed the National Anthem, and later on, both the band and the color guard performed themes from The Wizard of Oz.

Though the rain put a bit of a damper on the mood, it seemed like all of the spectators had a good time. When asked, a student exclaimed that they had made valuable memories with their friends, saying, “[Yes] [i]t’s so much fun and I’m with my friends. It’s so colorful!  And watching the cheerleaders and the band play is so amazing.”

Luckily, our Cardinals didn’t  suffer too many injuries despite the rain. However, the cheerleaders were not able to perform their carefully choreographed stunt routine as a result of the weather. When asked if the rain had affected their cheerleading, a cheerleader, who wished to stay anonymous, said, “It has, but in a fun way”.

Our Cardinals played against the KIPP Academy (Cooper Norcross Academy, aka The Titans). The game was intense, and the final score resulted in 8-38, KIPP.

Our Cardinals put up a good fight, ultimately making the Homecoming Football game an iconic school event. The spirited atmosphere and energy of the event is contagious. To spend your Friday night watching our Cardinals play and making memories with your friends is an amazing experience. We highly recommend going to the Homecoming Football game next year if you didn’t get a chance to this year. It’s an event you wouldn’t want to miss!
