Written by: Adriana Acquah (‘30)
This past September, the freshmen class officers were elected to lead the Class of 2030. Aubrielle Fleming was elected as President, Anastasia Cook as Vice President, and Sunny Love as Secretary. Additionally, London George was voted in as Treasurer and Ashley Pressley as Historian. To welcome the new officers, here are a few questions we asked them about their new positions.
What gave you the idea/made you want to become an officer?
Aubrielle Fleming (President): “I got the idea of becoming an officer a year ago when a teacher of mine encouraged me to run for middle school president and I decline[d] due to a busy schedule. I always wanted to have a leading role, especially when it came to helping my grade.”
Anastasia Cook (Vice President): “I wanted to be an officer because I wanted to get more involved in our school and help make freshman year a fun experience for everyone. I also thought it would be a good opportunity to share ideas, work with other people, and make a difference in our class.”
Sunny Love (Secretary): “I wanted to be an officer because I wanted to be more involved in my class and help make our freshman year fun and memorable. I also wanted to make sure everyone’s ideas and opinions could be heard.”
Ashley Pressley (Historian): “I first got the idea when I saw the paper and it made me want to run for Historian since I enjoy taking pictures and documenting stuff.”
London George (Treasurer): “Sunny actually suggested that I become treasurer because I have always been good with budgeting and money so when she ran for secretary I said YOLO and put myself out there!”
Do you have any specific goals while in office?
Aubrielle Fleming (President): “I hope in office, we can build more connections and friendships among our grade.”
Anastasia Cook (Vice President): “My main goals are to help bring our class closer together, plan fun activities, and make sure everyone feels included. I also want to help with fundraising so we can have a great senior year when the time comes.”
Sunny Love (Secretary): “My main goal is to get more people involved in class activities and make sure it’s not always the same people participating[.] I want everyone to feel included and have a say in what we do as a class.”
Ashley Pressley (Historian): “I want to be able to document important school events.”
London George (Treasurer): “My specific goal is to build bonds with my classmates/peers and see what it would be like to have a leadership position. I want to express my creativity, have better communication, and strengthen my managerial/leader[ship] skills.”
Are you looking forward to any future events/activities in your role?
Aubrielle Fleming (President): “I'm looking forward to Class Wars competitions since our grade will be together and work against other grades.”
Anastasia Cook (Vice President): “Yes! I’m looking forward to helping plan school events, fundraisers, and activities that bring everyone together. I’m excited to see our class spirit grow and make memories with everyone throughout high school.
Sunny Love (Secretary): “I’m looking forward to helping plan spirit days, fundraisers, and fun events that bring our class together.”
Ashley Pressley (Historian): “Yes! I look forward to going to different events and taking pictures!”
London George (Treasurer): “I am looking forward to coordinating flyers and decorations for our school events, activities, and spirit days as I am on the communications & outreach committee.”
Has being an officer been like what you expected it to be?
Aubrielle Fleming (President): “Yes, it has its ups and downs since I have a busy schedule but I love being president.”
Anastasia Cook (Vice President): “It’s been a little different than I expected because there’s more planning and responsibility involved than I thought. However, it’s been a good experience, and I’ve learned that being an officer is about working as a team, listening to people’s ideas, and doing your best to represent your class.”
Sunny Love (Secretary): “It’s been exciting to be more involved and have the opportunity to help make decisions for our class. I’m still learning what it takes to be a good officer, but I’m looking forward to everything we get to do this year.”
Ashley Pressley (Historian): “Yes it is, it requires being hardworking and responsible which is what I thought it would require.”
London George (Treasurer): “Yes and no, there’s not as much responsibility as I thought it would be, sometimes it does get a little tricky responding to messages after practice because there’s always something to do at home but the workload is surprisingly light especially for the treasurer.”
As the school-year continues, the officers will continue to offer their guidance and newfound leadership within their roles. With the school year just starting, it will be exciting to see what they can achieve in order to build an exciting year ahead.
