As the school year progresses, students are finding exciting new opportunities to grow beyond the classroom. This year, our school welcomes two brand new clubs to help students get involved with their passions and build lasting memories: the Cybersecurity Club and Morgan's Message.
Cyber Security
Earlier this month, junior Marcus Lechman, founded the cyber security club alongside Mrs. Christine Read. Marcus explains that his interest in forming the club began during this Computer Science Principles class at the end of last year. The class had just started covering the basics of cybersecurity, and he was immediately drawn in. Marcus says, “I was already interested in pursuing computer science and programming,” he said. “The ability to hack, understand how computer systems really work, and learn these skills together with other students really motivated me to start the club.”

The Cyber Security Club focuses on preparing to compete in CTF (Capture The Flag) challenges which involve topics such as:
Cryptography
Web Exploitation
Binary Exploitation
Digital Forensics
The club is also planning on competing in the New Jersey Cybersecurity & Communications Integration Cell (NJCCIC) Cybersecurity Competition, which will host teams from around the state to compete in CTF-style competitions.
Why Join?
Cyber security is a growing field that blends creativity, logic, and strategy. Student who join the club can expect to improve their:
Critical thinking skills
Problem solving skills
Technical knowledge (including
coding and ethical hacking)
Collaboration and teamwork
Beyond competitions, the club also hopes to make a positive impact on the community. “The cyber security club teaches students how to
protect themselves from threats online”, Marcus shares, “We plan on hosting workshops/community events that will teach people safe internet practices by sharing how information is disclosed and moved throughout the internet as well as how they can improve their security online.”

The club plans to host workshops and community events focused on:
Online safety
Understanding digital footprints
Protecting personal information
This year's goal for the club is to build a strong foundation and introduce students to ethical hacking, and create an environment where anyone, regardless of their experience, feels welcome to learn.
Morgan's Message
This year, juniors Slavi Dusichka and Samantha Salazar-Silva have become the two student ambassadors of another new club, Morgan’s Message, teaming up with school staff, Ms. Sarah Berardi and Mrs. Dana Williams to focus on mental health within the athletic community and spreading a network where everyone participating in athletics can share their stories to not only focus on their physical health, but their mental health too.

Morgan’s Message is named after Morgan Rodgers, who was a lacrosse player that committed suicide because of mental health issues, but the club is dedicated to all athletes and raising awareness about the importance of mental health. Slavi shares she was inspired to start this club because, “It’s so important to recognize that you are bigger than your sport. One of the club’s slogans is ‘Human > Athlete’ and this captures just that; your sport doesn’t define you. One bad play or game doesn’t define you”.
Why Join?
This year the club’s biggest goal is to spread Morgan’s Message to student athletes so that they can
Better understand how to manage their mental health
Be better teammates and athletes
Have a sense of community to fall into when they need help
Normalize mental health conversations
By joining this club and learning these skills and ideas, you not only support others and the club's message, but also yourself and your own health. Slavi says that, “We aim to normalize mental health conversations because it is just as important as physical health”. As a club focusing on the mental health of athletes, Morgan’s Message, hopes to reach all athletes on a deeper level.
If you are interested in joining this club and supporting their cause, the club meets every third Tuesday of every month, where the club participates in learning about mental health, using that knowledge to support themselves, and building a network in which anyone can confide in.
