On January 30th, several Lawrence High School students took part in a walk-out against ICE. This student-led protest was part of a series of walk-outs taking place in high schools across the country. These mass walk-outs are in protest of ICE (the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement) and the detaining of American immigrants and citizens. Many of these walk-outs have been organized through social media and community organizations, encouraging high schoolers across the country to participate and support their students and fellow citizens.

Under the supervision of LHS Administration, participating students walked around the parking lot, demonstrating their freedom to gather. After this, the participants gathered in the auditorium to listen to keynote speeches given by students, administration, and community members. This event helped bring students together, giving many first and second generation Americans the platform to express their pride for their heritage. One surveyed student, when asked her opinions on the walk-out said, “It was really inspiring to see everyone gather together.”
Throughout history, people have protested for their beliefs and today, this constitutional right remains. Lawrence High School demonstrated how a peaceful protest can be used to educate and raise awareness to modern day issues that are directly impacting our community. This day made it evident that students can stand up for what they believe in, and are able to join together in support of each other.
