On October 30th, the LHS Varsity Football team capped off their season with a 20-7 win over Hamilton West, and at the same time, Coach Robert Radice earned his 100th career win!
Throughout this monumental season, the team demonstrated grit and determination, highlighted by key victories such as a 28-14 homecoming win over Ewing and a nail-biting overtime triumph against Hamilton West. Although the team's record doesn't reflect it, they had a very strong season, with multiple wins and numerous occasions of close matches including a loss to Bordentown by three points and a win over Princeton by seven points. With a majority of the team returning for the 2025 season, the LHS Varsity Football Team looks to have a very successful season ahead of them.
To learn more about the football team, we asked Senior Mahmoud Ali and Junior Francis Gage to answer a few questions and give their final thoughts on the 2024 football season.
How do you think the season went?
Gage: “I think we showed a lot of improvement this year. A 5-5 record doesn’t tell the whole story because we played tough teams and kept games close. I’m proud of how we played every game.”
What was your favorite moment from the season?
Ali: “Definitely our game against Hamilton West. It was intense, and we came together as a team to pull off the win. I scored my first touchdown that game as well. Seeing everyone celebrate in the end zone was unforgettable.”
What was the team’s biggest strength this year?
Gage: “Our defense stepped up in big games. We had some key stops against good teams, and our communication on the field improved as the season went on.”
What’s one area you hope the team improves for next year?
Gage: “I think we can work on starting games stronger. A lot of times we had to play catch-up, so focusing on quick starts will be key for next season. Despite this, our team worked really well together and we were able to pull through most matches.”
Do you plan to continue playing football after high school?
Ali: “Absolutely. Football has been a huge part of my life, and I’d love to play in college. No matter what, I’ll always appreciate what I learned here at Lawrence.”
With a season full of growth, learning, and memorable moments, the Lawrence High School football team has set the stage for a bright future. The lessons learned this year will no doubt carry over as the team prepares for another competitive season next fall.
