Within Lawrence High School, the Science & Health Academy is a selective, application-based program designed for students with a strong interest in science, technology, and healthcare. Each year, only a limited number of students from each grade are accepted into the academy, creating a focused learning community where motivated students can grow together. Under the guidance of Advisor Gwenn Andahazy, the academy prepares students to become competent, capable citizens in an ever-evolving scientific world.

The academy emphasizes more than academic achievement, it prioritizes community and collaboration. Students are given a dedicated space to engage in thoughtful discussions, build friendships with like-minded peers, and support one another as they explore shared interests. This environment encourages curiosity and confidence, allowing students to challenge ideas, exchange perspectives, and develop as emerging professionals.

A defining feature of the Science & Health Academy is its hands-on, inquiry-driven approach to learning. Through team-based activities and project-focused work, students actively apply their knowledge in science and health sciences rather than passively absorbing information. These experiences foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills that are essential for success in both college and future careers.

Throughout the year, academy members gain exposure to a wide range of college and career pathways. Students interested in fields such as astronomy, physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, pharmaceuticals, and other science- and technology-based professions are introduced to opportunities that broaden their understanding of what these careers truly entail. Events like STEM Society Career Night and other academy-supported programs allow students to interact with professionals and explore disciplines they may not have previously considered.

In addition, students participate in Academy Structured Learning Experiences, where they work collaboratively on project-based tasks designed to simulate real-world challenges. These experiences help students develop professionalism, teamwork, and adaptability while preparing them for the expectations of higher education and the workforce.

Ultimately, the Science & Health Academy stands out because it blends academic rigor, experiential learning, and a strong sense of community. By providing access to enriching opportunities and fostering meaningful connections among students, the academy empowers its members to explore their passions and confidently pursue futures in science, healthcare, and beyond.
